for all those curious, here's a look at the new 2003 report.
jehovah's witnesses have been growing, but not a whole lot.
a peak of 6,429,351 publishers reported preaching in 235 lands.
Thanks, Joker10.

i grew up in nyc.
my book study conductor was one of the more senior elders in his department.
i used to remember that bethel always gave him (or at least loaned him for ministerial use) a real nice, tricked out, brand new lexus.
Just to confirm JT's comments.

if anyone's been to wt farm, they have their own graveyard.. because so many of the 'anointed' are buried there, it's known locally as "the launch pad.
ok, so it made me laugh!.

Hi, interesting thread.
From memory, the Society only says that Watchtower main study articles are read and 'approved' by the GB (thus making it 'food at the proper time'), and not secondary articles nor Awake! issues.
Does anyone remember whether that is correct?

does anyone have any tips how to resign as a jw elder without being disfellowshipped or disassociated?.
thanks.. ken
Instead of turning in your Flock book... maybe you could "loose" it. Those books are VERY valuable when the WTS denies that it teaches something that is clearly outlined in the book.
Actually, elsewhere, I already have the whole book in Word format. It makes it far easier for searching!

It sems to me that if you truly are an elder, you would be clever enought to know that you dont need to be df or da to stop serving or to step aside.
The point is that the Society always require a specific reason why you are stepping aside. A Society letter to all bodies of elders states that "The Society's approval is required when deletions of elders and ministerial servants are made," when (a) a brother resigns for personal reasons or (b) the elders recommend the deletion of a brother because he no longer meets the Scriptural requirements.
The problem then arises that if you tell the truth and say you want to resign because you no longer believe the Society teaches what is in the Scriptures, you will either be disfellowshipped or disassociated.
That is why I was asking brothers who had already resigned as elders what had worked--or hadn't, as the case may be--for them.

Ironic, isn't it, that all the advice on this thread has to do with NOT telling the truth and simply saying you're fed up with the scam and you're not going to play anymore? What does that say about the cult status of this organization? Brave men reduced to making lame excuses and hoping not to get busted, all because the org holds our families and our reputations over our heads ("we have your family and we're not afraid to use them!")
willyloman made a great point. Someone I chatted to on another board put it very concisely, while still in the organisation:
"You know what is interesting.. this IS the truth yet you can't TELL the truth."
I thought that was brilliant.
I'm sympathetic, as I'm in the middle of a similar process -- as so many are.Best wishes, willyloman, I'm thinking of you. Regards, Ken
hi guys, men, former-elders:.
the last leg of the legal project is afoot.

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions. I've got some considerin' to do!
So, let's see. ;-) From all you say, I simply need to take a job three hours away and work a 15-hour day, start dropping dark hints to the PO I'm under an enormous load, do less and less and then turn in my Pay Attention book, write a short letter telling them I'm resigning and then say nothing else, ever.
Although I could just mention in passing that my health is shattered from drinking too much Belhaven Export and I'm suffering from depression and panic attacks, my teenage kids are running amok, I *love* Heavy Metal music and I'm no longer a good example to the congregation as I can't do the job with enthusiasm.
And when he visits, tell the CO to mind his own business or I'll set my rotweilers on him. Then move 500 miles away.
Well, that sounds simple enough!
Oh, and if I was in the US, I additionally could vote Democrat, claim mental incompetence and start acting totally nuts (I thought that applied to all - southern - Californians anyway... oops, sorry avishai :-) [Stray thought: pity more Californians weren't 'mentally incompetent' recently!]
Seriously though, I really appreciate all your input. It has given me a lot to think about and has been a brilliant help. And thanks also for your warm welcome to the board.
Best wishes,
Ken
